trying to wrap my head around the mass shooting that happened in oregon earlier this week. when i saw this morning that this had happened, i sunk in my chair. you really cannot do justice to what these kids and what these teachers have just experienced." in the classroom where colin goddard was shot at virginia tech, there were 17 people in that classroom. only seven of them survived. two dozen kids were shot and wounded in a high school cafeteria in springfield, oregon in 1998. 1998. the police chief there now, who was a first responder that horrible day at that oregon high school 14 years ago said today about newtown, "i know that there is going to be a lot of emotion in that community." he said," in addition to the victims and the families in newtown, that his heart goes out to the police and the emergency services personnel that responded to deal with this, because this is going to take a toll on a lot of people." beth nimmo whose daughter was killed in the columbine high school mass shooting, she said today, "as far as the parents go, they're not going to know what hit them for a

to bring to your attention. this coming to us out of oregon. in fact, a suburb of portland, oregon. you can see emergency vehicles are responding to a shopping center where apparently an active shooter is inside the mall. take a look at the number of cars that are in the parking lot and being that this is peak christmas shopping season, you can imagine there are probably quite a few people inside that mall at this time. we don't know much about this but we have been told that there are possibly multiple victims. again, this is an active shooter and a breaking situation and you can see that some of the emergency vehicles are still arriving on the scene. again, a suburb of portland, oregon. these pictures coming to us from the helicopter live courtesy of our affiliate, katu. we will keep an eye on this story for you and as we zoom in to see if we can see a stretcher is coming out of that ambulance but it looks like it's an empty one. at this point, only some of the reports suggesting there have been multiple victims but we don't know if there have been any people killed. we will continue to g

earlier tonight at a shopping mall in portland, oregon. a gunman with what witnesses describe as a rifle opening fire on holiday shoppers. two people were killed. the shooter also killed, and one person has been seriously injured according to the sheriff's department. an eyewitness who had been browsing the watch counter inside macy's described the scene to our portland, oregon affiliate kgw tv. >> constant boom, boom, boom, boom,boom, boom, boom, boom. it wasn't just a couple of shots. whatever the shooter was shooting at, they continued to shoot. an employee of the store actually saw a masked gunman come in. and as fast as she got the call to security, the gunshots started. so i and others just hit -- you know, got behind the counter. and a couple of people stood there and i got them to duck down too. kind of wait until the coast is clear enough. and then i got down and other people, we said we need to get to the back of the store. let's work our way through the walls. we went back to the dressing rooms. one of the employees was trying to get people in the dressing room. and i urged he

portland, oregon, area. when this storm slammed the coastline, 25-foot waves along the shoreline. more than a foot of snow in the mountains. two feet of snow, in washington and the cascades. take this storm inland. it brings hurricane-force winds to lake erie and lake michigan. up to a foot of snow in path that goes from denver all the way toward green bay, wisconsin. and then, that storm continues east, right at the wrong time for the holidays. the strongest northwest storm of the season blew in monday, with winds reaching 100 miles per hour. knocking out power lines, bringing down trees and creating blizzard conditions in the washington and oregon cascade mountains. just south of tacoma, washington, a tree fell into this house. puncturing the ceiling of a baby's room and narrowly missing his crib. the baby was unharmed. higher elevations from washington to utah are now feeling the cold air of this winter storm, and expecting up to three feet of snow. 17 states are in winter weather warnings and watches. from the northwest to arizona and all the way into minnesota and wisconsin. by wednesd

are looking at a live picture outside a mall in portland, oregon. people have been killed. witnesses say the gunman had a rifle. we will report later. president obama, i'm going to switch gears now. he has hired 101 new government employees every day since i took office in 2009. that comes to 143,000 over paid workers. let's talk to chris edwards director of tax and policy at the kato institute. but besides this number 143,000 workers, when everybody has basketball getting laid off. average civilian pay, average federal workday, $134,000. that is $32,000 more than the average pay. that is astonishing. >> if you look at total compensation, the average worker does $124,000 a year versus $68,000 a year. the benefits are amazing. they get a 401(k) styled pension and they get high job security. they are laid off one quarter of the rate that high workers are. we don't want to draw the best and most skilled workers in washington. >> it is interesting to me, people seem to know this. 67% of us think that the people in the private sector work harder than those in the public sector. the federal wo
